Your Council

Building Officer - Ref 020

It’s a great time to join our Building Team – A lot is happening in Kapiti. The area’s growing, which means there’s a lot of residential and commercial building – and that means plenty of new consents to approve and inspect. Located in Paraparaumu it’s an easy commute by train or an easy drive from the Hutt against the flow of peak traffic with a car park for staff.

Our Building Officer role is multi graded and covers both approval/processing work and inspections.  You’ll be working directly with customers to provide professional and technical advice on their consents. You’ll discuss their plans with them and their designers, advise them on the necessary documentation and approvals, process their consents, and inspect the work.

We’re looking for a good team fit, both for personality and range of skills and experience. Ideally we are looking for an experienced building officer in either inspections or approvals with a qualification (to meet regulation 18 requirements) and current assessed competencies. However, others are not precluded from making an application.

There are several paths into this role if you aren’t already experienced in a similar role in another council. You could also be a tradesperson who’s looking to move on, or a recent graduate in a subject such as building science. If you don’t have an appropriate qualification you would need to be prepared to work towards one.

Kāpiti Coast District Council is committed to building an organisation that is respected for its caring, dynamic and effective “open for business” approach. We are looking for someone who shares those values and excellent interpersonal skills and a strong customer service focus are essential.

The real key for this role is that you need both excellent technical and people skills, as you need to be able to gain a customer’s trust and confidence in your knowledge. Along with that, you’ll also need to be able to deliver sometimes challenging messages tactfully but firmly, while maintaining your rapport with the customer.

There’s a lot to get excited about here. Contact with people, using your skills, opportunities to expand your knowledge, and a friendly, supportive team – what more could you ask for?

Enquiries about this position should be directed to Katharine wheeler, Building Team Manager on 04 296 4700 or free phone 0800 486 486.

Applicants will need to undergo the usual pre-employment checks, including drug and alcohol screening and police, criminal history and credit checks. Please note you must be eligible to work in New Zealand.
