Dog & animal management

Dogs bring joy to many individuals and families around the district. Most dog owners are great at taking responsibility for their furry friends, providing them with the right care and ensuring they are registered each year. However, sometimes dogs escape their properties or go missing and a few naughty pooches can display bad behaviour in public places. The information below explains what to do if you find a stray dog and what could happen if your dog is uncontrolled and/or unregistered, along with registration fees for the 2016/17 year.

Reporting a stray, escaped or missing dog

If you need to report a stray, barking or escaped dog OR if your dog has gone missing, please phone us on 0800 486 486.

Impoundment

If your dog is uncontrolled in a public place, is found to be unregistered or is creating noise causing distress it will be impounded. We will endeavour to contact a dog's owner as identified on its dog tag to make arrangements for any outstanding fees to be paid and for the impounded dog to be collected.  Our target is to do this within a day, and during normal business hours we're often able to do it much quicker than that.

During weekends and public holidays we offer a reduced service with set times when dogs can be collected.  If your dog has been impounded we'll endeavour to be in touch with you ahead of our 9.00-10.00am and 4.00-5.00pm collection periods.

If the dog has no identification, animal control will impound it for seven days after which it becomes the property of council.
