Aged workforce
An independent study shows there is growing need for older people to re-join the workforce. Kāpiti Coast Council’s Economic Development team is looking at the possibility – and willingness - of older people to return to the work force.
The study has evolved further, while some may be keen to work, there are others who are keen to give back to their community and others who are employers/entrepreneurs who have built their business and can mentor others on that journey.
The work further reveals.
Being an Employee: roles must be flexible and shouldn’t be laborious.
Being a Volunteer: those who are keen to keep their minds and bodies active and a financial gain is not a motivator.
Being an Employer: research indicates the region is home to people who have done well in their prime life and have chosen to retire in Kāpiti. Most are self-employed and can generate income and do so. They are open to hiring older workers.
The study dovetails locally with the Government’s Older Workers Employment Action blueprint supporting and encouraging older people to stay in the workforce and for employers to be more inclusive. While this whole project is at a very early stage, Council wants to understand. Under the first strand – i.e., Being an employee- this is an attempt to explore if there is broad interest in looking for work amongst our members.
