Milk taps saving businesses in plastic bottles
After years of experience delivering milk and dealing with small businesses, we established Wellington Milk to provide a business model that prioritises personalised and reliable service and sustainable packaging with zero waste.
Wellington Milk is owned and operated by Roger and Amber Duncum who are based in Ōtaki and the milk distribution business services the Greater Wellington Region. Installing milk taps and delivering fresh milk, they distribute Kaipaki Dairies fully sustainable milk including plant-based options to businesses committed to reducing their plastic waste.
Delivering zero waste fresh milk
Roger has been in the milk business for over 17 years and he and Amber previously worked as Meadow Fresh contractors in the Hutt Valley.
Roger shares about the benefits of the milk tap system and why Wellington Milk was established.
“After years of experience delivering milk and dealing with small businesses, we established Wellington Milk to provide a business model that prioritises personalised and reliable service and sustainable packaging with zero waste. We provide two zero waste options to suit our customers’ needs with refillable one litre glass bottles and an exciting new option being an attractive looking milk tap system. We install milk taps for cafes, hospitality, offices, and other businesses. This provides a solution for these businesses to receive their milk differently and not in plastic bottles.”
Milk taps are designed to sit right next to your coffee machine. The milk is then delivered in 10L or 20L reusable pails that sit in the fridge.
“Our first milk tap install in Kāpiti was at The Custard Pie in Paraparaumu. The process is simple, we work directly with the venue to install the milk tap to fit the purpose. We then train staff on how to operate the system and cleaning requirements. We also look after the ongoing support maintenance of the tap system. Once installed we deliver milk in buckets weekly.”
The milk distributed by Wellington Milk comes directly from Kaipaki Dairy in Waikato. Kaipaki Dairies offers premium dairy in sustainable packaging solutions. Currently saving 20,000 bottles from being produced monthly through their reusable packaging model.
“The milk comes straight out of the cow and to the Kaipaki factory which is right next door and then directly onto the truck and down to Wellington. Ensuring it is super fresh and the turnaround time from order to milk collection and delivery in Wellington is approximately 48 hours.” Says Roger
Custard Pie Café owner Paul Fleming said they were looking for a practical solution to reduce their plastic waste.
“We get delivery of high-quality barista milk that provides a good froth and product for our customers.”
“The cost is marginally more than plastic bottle milk options, but we do not have the extra hassle of dealing with the plastic waste. This saves on staff time and energy, plus we have had small savings in recycling bin costs to offset the increase in price.“
“The milk tap looks good in the café and the customer response has been positive. Practically it is a very clever solution, but it does require you to review your fridge set up to accommodate the buckets.”
Wellington Milk advised that Custard Pie currently go through around 24 buckets every week, and this equates to 120 two litre plastic bottles no longer being used and reduces the businesses carbon footprint.
