Accessing our Civic Building, Council Chambers and Mayor's office
At our Civic Building at 175 Rimu Road, Paraparaumu, you can talk to our friendly staff to get help, sit in on a meeting in our Council Chambers, or meet with the Mayor. You need to book to meet with the Mayor – you can do that using our Request a meeting with the Mayor form.
If you notice something missing from this page, please tell us.
Entering the building
We have three accessible parking spots outside the front entrance to our service centre. Two are across Iver Trask Place, and one is right in front of the door (painted in blue).
See larger image of our accessible parks [JFIF 490 KB].
The kerb is lowered for wheelchair and child buggy access at the rear of the accessible car park directly outside the building's door.
There are no ramps or slopes to the footpath or door in this flat area.
See larger image of our kerb access and entrance way [JFIF 4.56 MB].
We have two automatic sliding doors to enter the Council building.
The first door slides to the left; the second slides to the right.
The clear width of the door is 1.2 metres.
There is a grassy area service dogs can use outside Kāpiti Primary School, near the two accessible parking spots and the crossing to Coastlands.
Please clean up after your dog. There is a bin beside the path, behind you when facing the grassy area.

Going through the automatic doors, you enter our Council's Paraparaumu Service Centre.
In front of you, behind the service centre counter, are our service centre staff. They can help you with payments to Council or finding out about Council processes and consents. Please talk to them if you have any questions or need help.
On your left is:
- a quiet seating area
- stairs with handrail to the first floor.
To your right and around the corner is access to:
- a lift to the first floor
- Council Chambers
- public toilets (including an accessible toilet).
Please talk to our service centre staff if you need to use a telephone to call a taxi.
There is a quiet seating area to your left as you come through the automatic doors.
Please use this area if you need some time out. Note this is a public space, so others may also be using it.
We have two accessible toilets, signposted and located off the corridor opposite the Council Chambers.
They are the required height, have grab rails, and are wheelchair accessible with sliding doors.
We use high-contrast images for signs in our building, including directions to toilets and exits.
Council Chambers are where the elected members of the Kāpiti Coast District Council have their formal meetings of Council, committees and sub-committees. You can learn more about these meetings in our section about The role of Council.
Doors
The doors to Council Chambers have large handles and are pull to open.
Hearing assistance
There is a hearing loop installed in the Council Chambers. Please ask for a receiver if you need one.
The Mayor's office is on the first floor of our Civic Building. To meet with the Mayor, you need to request a meeting. See Mayor for more information.
Access to first floor
To get to the first floor of our building, you can use:
- two flights of stairs with handrail
- a wheelchair-accessible lift with low buttons and braille.
When you exit the lift on the first floor, turn left and go past the top of the stairs to find the door to the Mayor's office.
