Kāpiti know-how: Rainy day rescue

They say into each life some rain must fall, and unfortunately that can sometimes even include a Kāpiti summer.

So, what’s there to do when the weather doesn’t play ball this summer?

Staying in

Our Kāpiti Coast District Libraries have plenty to keep you and the whānau entertained.

Remember our Summer reading challenge for those aged 5–13 years. There’s nothing like a great book on a rainy day to spark a life-long love of reading.

Even when our libraries are closed, you can:

A hot tip – sign up for these apps in advance, so you know they’ll work when you need them!

Heading out

First and foremost, our pools are a great rainy day activity for the whole whānau! From the hydroslide and flying fox at Coastlands Aquatic Centre, to the splashpad and water fun at Ōtaki Pool and our outdoor Waikanae Pool ( the worst that can happen is that you’ll just get wet), our pools are a great place to splash about without your gumboots on a rainy day.

All three of our pools have daily SPLASH! time with inflatables from 1–4.30pm during the holidays, and there’s Aquafitness classes you can join in, too.

Dodge the showers at a local playground if you’re feeling brave!

If you’re an art or history buff, visit the wonderful Toi MAHARA gallery in Mahara Place, Waikanae, or our local museums. Why not take the car and follow one of our local Heritage trails, or visit some of the fabulous local art dotted around our public spaces.

And of course, there’s always the tried-and-true cabin-fever-busting raincoat and gumboots stomp through the puddles to get some fresh air!
