Staying on course for safe summer boating

Many of us love to explore our beautiful coastline by getting out on the water. To make sure you return home safely, it’s important to follow the right safety tips.

Coastguard Kāpiti is the best source for information for safe boating around the Kāpiti Coast.

Without going overboard (see what we did there!), our essential boating safety tips this summer are:

  • Lifejackets – make sure you wear them!
  • Check the weather before you decide to head out.
  • Trip reporting – always log your trip when you’re heading out.
  • Communications – always take two forms of waterproof comms with you.

You can drive on Kāpiti Coast beaches in designated boat launching areas to launch and retrieve boats. Check our launching zones map for where you can launch your boat this summer.

Do check in on Coastguard Kāpiti regularly – they’re the experts in boating safety on the Kāpiti Coast and will help you stay safe out on the water.

Maritime New Zealand also has great resources on being a responsible skipper, and keeping to the rules on the water.

Happy boating and have a wonderful and safe summer on the water!
