Explore hidden Waikanae Beach these summer holidays

We all know and love summer in Waikanae Beach! From lazy days on the sand to summer ice creams (or fish and chips) under the macrocarpas looking at Kāpiti Island, and the awesome cafe culture, retro summer vibes at Waikanae Beach feel like home.

Did you know there's a hidden side to Waikanae Beach? Pull on your walking shoes, grab a takeaway coffee (and a pétanque set!), and wander with us...

Our Waimeha Domain has not only an awesome playground and access to our gorgeous beach (make sure you know the summer dog rules!), beside the tennis court there's also a petanque pitch!

You can join the Waikanae Petanquers there 10am on a Monday, or 1.30pm on a Friday – or pop down any time for a play. Anyone can have a go!

Behind the tennis courts, in the shade of the macrocarpas, there's a volleyball net and court anyone can use.

With a picnic table nearby, bring the whānau down or meet friends for Friday night fish and chips and a quick game!

If you get too hot, it's just a hop, skip and jump through the beach access for a refreshing dip.

Once you've finished your sporting endeavours, set out on a magical mystery walking tour of Waikanae Beach. 

Takeaway coffee in hand, stroll and look for garden sculptures, imaginative letter boxes, retro and interesting architecture, and fabulous murals.

Waikanae Beach has hidden parks and paths – which ones do you know? Adventure down some quiet pathways - but make sure you check your phone map that you're on a reserve or marked pathway, and not someone's doorstep!

Be sure to check your phone map to be sure you're on either green reserve land (left) or a marked pathway (right).

Keep an eye out for fairy doors!

Waimeha Lagoon Reserve is a special space. From Victor Weggery Playground to the nearby boardwalk, there's something for everyone. The wide grassy spaces are a great place to bring the whānau down for a game of cricket or football.

Pop down and have a play – it's a great way to meet new friends as others join in our friendly village.

Further round the reserve is the wildlife hide. Sit down and have some quiet time, seeing the birdlife in this special place.

As we wind down to the river, and up towards the Otaihanga footbridge, there's a very special memorial glade tucked away. This is a lovely space to have a sit and breather on a hot day.

The memorial is to former Kāpiti Borough Councillor Raukura (Cookie) Leather. It's a very special spot.
