4 Mar 2025

Recreation Aotearoa - Te Whai Oranga Parks Week is here, and it's the perfect excuse to get outside, breathe in the fresh air, and soak up the beauty of our little slice of paradise.

Beyond the more well-known parks and reserves, Kāpiti is home to some incredible hidden gems, just waiting for you to discover them. Whether you're looking for a quiet escape, a family-friendly adventure, or pockets of nature to explore, here's some of our top picks to add to your must-visit list.

1. Ames Street Reserve, Paekākāriki

Nestled along the coastline, Ames Street Reserve offers some of the best views in Kāpiti. It’s a perfect picnic spot with sweeping ocean vistas and a chance to spotting kororā, the world’s smallest penguins. If you’re up for a short, scenic stroll, take the Penguin Park Walk, weaving through bush and beach, and with some seriously stunning views.

2. Edgewater Reserve, Waikanae

A peaceful riverside stop along the Waikanae River Trail, Edgewater Reserve is a great place for kicking back, enjoying a picnic, or taking a swing under the trees. With easy access, shaded seating, and a dog-friendly vibe, it’s a top pick for a laid-back day out. A great spot to dip your toes or for kids to build a dam. Remember, it's always best to check the water quality before you swim as harmful toxic algae can appear in warmer months.
