Ōtaki Civic Theatre reopens after refurbishment

The curtain was raised today on the newly refurbished Ōtaki Civic Theatre, reports the Kāpiti Coast District Council.

Mayor K Gurunathan said the seven-month renovation is the second project (after the Paraparaumu Memorial Hall) in the Kāpiti district to benefit from the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund assistance.

“This project aimed to address some of the building’s water ingress issues and to restore it to its former art deco glory.

“Major parts of the refurbishment include building a new roof and repairing, re-plastering and painting the theatre’s sidewalls.

“The stunning new paint job is reflective of colours from the art deco period. The use of warm gold colours and highlighting the streamline details are features of architectural design from the 1930s,” said Mayor Gurunathan.

Inside, work included repairs to the ceiling, upgrading the stage, new carpet and paint work in public areas, and bathroom repairs.

The project created work for locals and used several suppliers from across the Kāpiti District. Building waste, including timber, metal, concrete, and cables, that would once have been destined for the dump were sorted and recycled. Excess timber was donated to Zero Waste Ōtaki and scrap metal was recycled through a scrap metal dealer.

Mayor Gurunathan thanked everyone who helped return the spotlight to the Ōtaki Civic Theatre.
