Access ‘first class’ says former sportswoman

Coastlands Aquatic Centre has been described as a 'world class' facility when it comes to catering for the disabled.

Disability advocate and former paralympian Sandie Waddell, who recently moved to Paraparaumu, says the Aquatic centre is 'right up there' internationally.

"It is a stunning building and with the ramp, hoists and spacious changing facilities, I think this complex will cater for a wide range of needs in the Kāpiti community."

Mrs Waddlell, who has travelled extensively as a sportswoman, toured the pool as part of a disability workshop hosted by Council's Aquatic Facilities Manager Alison Law.

Ms Law says the workshop was held to establish an ongoing relationship with the disability sector of the community. It gave attendees an opportunity to provide advice, input and feedback on operations, equipment and programming.

"It was extremely positive and I've come away with some good ideas.  The participants particularly enjoyed the tour of the facility and were completely blown away - so positive and excited!"

A specially designed stairway for people with limited mobility arrived at the pool this week.

The ramp, provided in response to concerns raised by disability advocates, will arrive later in the year.
