Civic Building wins second award

Kāpiti Coast’s upgraded Civic Building has won silver at the 2014 Master Builder’s New Zealand Commercial Project Awards.

Construction company Armstrong Downes Commercial was presented with the silver award last Friday night for its work in transforming the 1970s building into a striking, totally refurbished civic administration centre which is fit for purpose, fully accessible, earthquake safe and reflects 21st Century architecture. This is the second award for the building since it was opened last year, winning a Wellington Architecture Award from the NZ Institute of Architects in October.

Over a 10-month build programme, the existing two-storey Council building was stripped back to its bare bones to enable seismic strengthening and redevelopment of the complex. A third of the original building was replaced and a new extension added with a full interior fitout bringing the total area of the upgraded building to 2000m². 

“This is fantastic recognition of the effort the team put in and we are so proud of the achievement," says Tony Doile, Managing Director Armstrong Downes Commercial. 

"It's the second community project we have built on the Kāpiti Coast which has won national recognition following on the heels of our national award for rebuilding the Paraparaumu Fire Station in 2009.”

Council’s Group Manager Community Services, Tamsin Evans says it is pleasing to know that both the design and construction of the Civic Building are of such quality that the project has received this recognition.
