Council adopts Reserve Management Plan

The Council has adopted a draft reserve management plan for Otaihanga’s 60-hectare park and made a decision on what to call it. 

During consultation, the public was asked what name they thought the reserve should be given and what they thought of the draft reserve management plan which outlines the main purposes of the park and what activities should be allowed/prohibited in it.

The plan was adopted at the Council’s meeting today and the name for the reserve has been decided as Otaraua. This name was recommended by local mana whenua Te Ᾱtiawa ki Whakarongotai, as it expresses the association of the hapῡ (sub-tribe) with the land and recognises mana whenua into the future. 

“Now that the plan for the reserve has been passed, we can get onto producing a development plan which will show how the land will be developed over time,” Deputy Mayor, Councillor Mike Cardiff says.

“This will be an exciting project, as developments such as new sports fields, amenity areas, and walking and cycling tracks will really benefit the community.”

The final reserve management plan will be available on the Council’s website next Monday.
