New Youth Council formed
The Youth Council, which advocates for Kāpiti Coast's young people, has just finished its annual recruitment drive and welcomed some keen new members on board.
Eleven new Youth Council members have joined eight members who are returning for another year.
“The Youth Council is great for opportunities, acceptance and leadership,” says Kendra Smith, who has been a member for four years. “It’s so diverse and you learn so much.”
The group recently went on a camp to Paekākāriki where they got to know each other better, learned about what the Youth Council does and what projects are on the agenda to help young people in Kāpiti.
They also worked on plans for some of these youth-led projects including a new Youth Centre, YouthFest 2015 and a number of specific programmes for young people in Ōtaki.
“I already feel so welcomed into the Youth Council,” says new member, Harris Sciascia. “I’m very keen to get started on working on great projects that make a difference for young people in Kāpiti.”
Councillor Janet Holborow works with the group to advise them on what Council is up to and how the Youth Council can contribute.
"It's great we have so many young people who are keen to make a difference and I'm looking forward to the input they will have into how we cater for youth in the district."
