School patrols march for road safety
Kāpiti school patrols took to the streets today to celebrate the hard work they’ve put into keeping roads safe around their schools.
Starting off at Coastlands Aquatic Centre, the patrols from eight primary schools marched past the Civic Building and across Rimu Road to assemble outside Coastlands by the cinema entrance.
They were addressed by Constable Jo Ryder, the School Community Officer who thanked the children for “making our roads safer”.
“These kids are the future leaders in keeping our roads safe and it’s important we acknowledge their efforts,” she says.
Mayor Ross Church then announced the winner of the School Patrol of the Year trophy, Kapanui School.
“We’re the only country in the world which lets our children manage traffic and road crossings around their schools,” he says.
“They do a great job and it gives them a sense of responsibility, pride and achievement.”
