Beach clean-up after flood

The large amount of rubbish washed up on the beach after the recent storms drove Raumati Beach residents into action.

The post-flood beach clean-up was organised by residents from Goldsborough Ave, Gabriel Street and Nugget Grove, a local ‘Greener Neighbourhoods’ group who promoted the event through Facebook, local radio and flyers.

There was a great response with 40 people turning up on Saturday morning, including Raumati Beach School pupils who are members of the school’s EcoTeam.

Around a dozen large rubbish bags were filled with debris, including a broken chair, a traffic cone, a punctured lilo and four old car tyres.

“It was really encouraging to see people from our local community getting together to look after one of our most valuable amenities, our beach,” Kate Foley, member of the ‘Greener Neighbourhoods’ group, said.  

“It provided a great opportunity to meet other people from Raumati and connect and share ideas about other ways to build stronger neighbourhoods. Everyone who came along should feel proud of their contribution to making a difference in our community.”

Council provided rubbish bags, gloves and bag pick-up as part of its commitment to waste minimisation and supporting sustainable projects in the community. 

‘Greener Neighbourhoods’ is a Council initiative which provides free advice and support for neighbours wanting to get to know each other better and reduce their environmental impact at the same time.
