Changes at Kāpiti libraries
A new learning centre is coming to Paraparaumu Library.
Kāpiti Coast District Libraries and Arts Manager Leeann Morgan says the centre will offer the opportunity for people to find out more about digital resources, as well as providing access to new learning tools and technology, such as a 3D printer and e-books.
“With so many books now available online, our staff are helping customers access these and providing training sessions on other key digital resources,” she says.
“The centre will be all about connecting and upskilling people. It will offer everything from one-on-one to group sessions. We’ll be teaching people about social media, hosting a Minecraft club, and providing exciting workshops to teach our community how to become self-published authors.”
“The community has told us how much they value their libraries and our aim is to keep up to date with the services we offer in this digital age while also providing a great range of good books and the same friendly service.”
The learning centre is expected to open next month and will be located on the mezzanine floor at Paraparaumu Library.
Mrs Morgan says it is one of a range of new features soon to be on offer at the libraries.
“We’ve been planning some new and exciting changes. Our aim is to improve our customers’ experience, providing opportunities for creativity, learning and connectivity.”
Four machines allowing customers to self-check-out library items will be installed – two in Paraparaumu and one each in Waikanae and Ōtaki.
Mrs Morgan says the libraries’ website is being updated to make it easier for customers to interact with the libraries via computers and smartphones.
“You can already reserve and renew books, check out e-books, browse the catalogue, access online resources and find out about upcoming library events – the new website will make it all even easier to do.”
The libraries layout will also be upgraded, shelves will be moved and there will be changes to furniture and lighting. At the Paraparaumu Library, the walled-circular Welcome Desk will be replaced and more space will be available in the entrance area.
