Council and police team up to keep beaches safe

The Council and police are working together this summer to help keep our beaches safe.

Environmental Standards Manager Nick Fowler says the organisations are teaming up to ensure beach users are aware of rules in place to ensure the safety of the public and to protect the environment.

“It’s in all our interests to behave responsibly on the beach and look after the environment but some people just need a reminder and that is what this joint initiative is all about.

“We’re not out to be the fun police, if you’ll pardon the pun, but to educate people about how we can all play a part in promoting beach safety and environmental care.”

Mr Fowler says vehicles on the beaches will be a particular focus.

“Vehicles are allowed on beaches in some areas in the north of the district but not in built-up areas except for launching and retrieving boats, when they must use the most direct route. Where vehicles are permitted on the beach, the speed limit is 20kms per hour and 10kms when driving through access ways. Quads and motorbikes are not allowed on any part of the beach.”

Mr Fowler says the Council has also had complaints about vehicles damaging fragile dunes.

“The Police will be out there with the intention of giving people friendly advice about safe use of the beach over summer. However anyone found causing damage or endangering the safety of other beach users may end up tucking a ticket in their togs.”
