Kāpiti knitters celebrates World Wide Knit in Public Day

Keen Kāpiti knitters have been spinning some yarns at the Paraparaumu Library.

Kāpiti Coast District Libraries celebrated World Wide Knit in Public Day at the weekend by hosting a group knitting session.

The sound of click-clacking needles filled the library on Saturday when more than 20 people came together to mark the day by knitting and passing on their knowledge of the age-old skill.

First-time and experienced knitters, crochet enthusiasts and people interested in learning more about the craft joined library staff to stitch together as part of the event, which ran from 10.30am to 12pm.

People came with their completed projects, half-finished garments and works in progress to stitch while they chatted about the benefits of the pastime.

Event organiser, Kāpiti Coast District Libraries Community Programmes Coordinator, Juana Kelsen says the event promotes the pleasure and enjoyment of knitting in a social setting.

“It’s the perfect way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company as well as learning something new about the craft,” she says.

“It was a great day and we were pleased from throughout the district taking part. 

“Everyone was socialising, sharing knitting tips, making friends and having a good time, and that’s what it’s all about.”

World Wide Knit in Public Day started in 2005 and is the largest knitter-run event in the world.
