Lego fans work on futuristic town centre

Kāpiti Lego fans of all ages are working together to build a futuristic model of the Paraparaumu Town Centre for the Sustainable Home and Garden Show.

Using their skills and imagination, the builders are attempting to show how the town centre might look in 2035. The display will also show some of the proposed activities included in Council’s Long Term Plan consultation.

Free workshops are being held every Saturday from 2 to 3:30pm at the Kapiti Community Centre between now and the Show on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March. As well as practicing building with Lego bricks, participants get to share their ideas, show their models and plan out the building project together. All are welcome to attend.

The 20 attendees at the first session last Saturday learnt about how much the town centre has changed in the past.  They also considered how things like climate change, new technology like 3D printing and self-driving cars as well as an aging population could influence how the town will develop in the future.

Organiser and Lego enthusiast Jake Roos says the project is shaping up to be fun as well as highly educational.

“Everyone loves Lego and this project is a great opportunity for fans to come together and explore some important issues in a way that is engaging and fun.”

Space within the huge 6.0 x 1.8m display case for the model town (being built by Menzshed Kapiti) is still limited so people wanting to take part in the project should register now at www.kapitcoast.govt.nz/ecotownbuildingcomp to avoid disappointment.  

Prizes are being awarded for the best models. The project is an initiative of Kāpiti Coast District Council and is sponsored by Coastlands, Farmers, Beca and MENZshed Kapiti.
