'Paws in the park' event!
Bring your dog down to Queen Elizabeth Park next Sunday 22 February for a walk with other dog lovers and their pooches!
Paws in the Park is designed to showcase the many great ‘dog friendly’ open spaces located across the region. Starting in Upper Hutt, councils in Kāpiti, Wellington, Hutt City and Porirua are joining in this year to host similar events.
“After being involved with Paws in the Park in Upper Hutt and seeing how much the community enjoyed the group dog walk and socialising, we decided to see if other councils in the region were keen to host events over summer,” says Catherine Wylde, Events Advisor for Greater Wellington Regional Council. “It’s great to now have all five councils on board.”
This year the event is supporting HUHA (Helping You Help Animals), a local charity with sanctuaries in Kāpiti and Upper Hutt. HUHA are passionate advocates for animal welfare and do a lot of wonderful work rehoming dogs. HUHA volunteers and dogs will be going on all the walks.
“We share a common belief with HUHA that responsible pet ownership should be fostered in communities,” says Mayor Ross Church. “This is a great opportunity for people to show their support and donate to the charity if they wish.”
Kāpiti residents will meet at Queen Elizabeth Park at the Wellington Road entrance in Paekākāriki. The walk, starting at 10am, is a loop route over the coastal and inland tracks and takes about an hour.
Please remember to bring your dog on a lead and plastic bags to collect any dog poo!
