Community Facilities Strategy development

Council is getting underway on a project to develop its Community Facilities Strategy, starting with a survey of facility owners and managers in the district.

The project has been identified in the FutureKāpiti Long term plan 2015–35 as one of the key activities in the first three years in growing community facilities and support in the district.

Community Services Acting General Manager Crispin Mylne says Council has a key role in leading and coordinating facility improvement in Kāpiti and is committed to developing the strategy for the district.

“It’ll provide a framework to guide the Council's decisions around involvement and investment in the district’s community facilities over the next 20 years or so,” he says.

“The aim is to ensure the district has facilities that are fit for purpose, address the needs of the community, avoid gaps or duplication, cope with population growth and changing user expectations, and meet the future demand arising from our vibrant, diverse and thriving district.”

Council will be taking the feedback gained in the survey of facility owners, community user groups, sports users groups and regional sports organisations and that gained in a series of community workshops being run later this year to use as the basis of a draft document. This will then go through a full public consultation process early next year with the project earmarked for completion next year.

“We want to work with the community to ensure we get the approach right and the first step is helping us understand the current facilities space in Kāpiti,” Mr Mylne says.
