Maclean Park update

Light fixtures at Maclean Park that have reached the end of their design life will be removed next week.

Investigation into 15 decorative path lights and their supporting poles show it was best to remove the fixtures due to safety concerns.

Council’s Parks and Recreation Manager Alison Law says the contractors’ findings show the poles, which are located near the playground and duck pond, have rusted at ground level and may fall.

“We don’t want to take any risks here and the best option is to remove the lights to ensure the safety of our park users,” she says.

“Safety is our number one priority and future lighting provision will be considered during the development plan process for the park. It is likely that a separate detailed lighting plan will be required to ensure we meet the needs of the area and make the best choices possible.”

Council’s work with the development plan for Maclean Park, including future possibilities for the pond, is on-going.

The pond is continuing to be filled and monitored to help get a clearer understanding of the cost and logistics that may be required if it’s decided to keep the pond functional long term.

Information from the monitoring will then feed into the development plan, which Council is going out for tender on next week.

The lights will be removed over the space of two days [18/19 August] depending on weather.

The work doesn’t affect the skate park floodlights or existing street lights.
