New traffic lights at Kāpiti road/Arawhata Road intersection

New traffic lights at the intersection of Kāpiti and Arawhata Roads will be switched on this week as part of the M2PP Alliance’s work to get the road ready for when the Expressway opens to traffic.

Group Manager Infrastructure Services Sean Mallon says it is anticipated that the new traffic lights will be switched on from Tuesday 8 November and the temporary roundabout will be removed.

The Council expects that traffic patterns will change on Kāpiti Road once these traffic lights are switched on and motorists get used to the new road layout.

Mr Mallon says it will take time for the new lights to fully to synchronise with existing traffic lights on Kāpiti Road.

“We are encouraging people travelling on Kāpiti Road this week to allow a little extra time for their journey. Traffic engineers will be monitoring traffic flows to ensure traffic keeps moving as efficiently as possible,” he said.

The new traffic lights at the intersection of Kāpiti Road and Arawhata Road have been put in place to ensure traffic moves efficiently once the Expressway opens and to provide a safe crossing for pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users and people on mobility scooters.

Mr Mallon says the new traffic lights form part of a series of improvements the Council has made to Kāpiti Road in preparation for the Expressway opening.   The Council has recently completed its works to provide a safe crossing at Langdale Ave, widen the road at Arko Place, install a new footpath between Lake View Court and the Kāpiti Landing roundabout, and improve safety at the Kāpiti Landing roundabout.

Work to widen the footpath on the southern side of Kāpiti Road between Arawhata Road and Ngahina Street and install on road cycle lanes is expected to be complete in December.
