Residents reminded to take care during windy weather in Kāpiti

Kāpiti residents are being reminded to take care during any wild and windy weather experienced on the coast this weekend.

From Saturday evening onwards, MetService predicted gale-force northwesterlies in Wairarapa, Kāpiti and Wellington, with further west to northwest gales expected on Sunday.

Metservice says one of the worst hit areas has been the Kāpiti Coast, with heavy rain and a high tides hammering coastal areas.

Group Manager Infrastructure Services Sean Mallon says the Council has responded to about half a dozen calls from residents relating to the weather in a 12-hour period from midnight Saturday.

Requests for service have come in from Paraparaumu, Raumati, Waikanae and Ōtaki for things such as minor surface flooding, broken trees branches, debris on the roads and a wonky TV aerial on council house.

"We are still experiencing high winds and a few trees down, but fortunately at this stage nothing too major," Mr Mallon says.

"However, our main area of concern is coastal tide surges, which may cause issues with seawalls, water washing over our coastal roads and tidal surge flows pushing up rivers and streams."

A footbridge in Raumati near the beach across the Wharemaku Stream has been temporarily closed off to ensure public safety.

"We do want to remind people to keep themselves, their pets and family safe. Be patient and use common sense by staying away from areas that may experience coastal surges," Mr Mallon says.

High tide was a couple if hours ago and the wind and rain is forecasted to ease later Sunday.

"We're hoping the impact of the weather will be receding soon. We're working hard to get to call-outs as soon as we can and we'll be co-ordinating any clean-ups efforts that are required first thing Monday morning," he says.
