Kāpiti Lights dons a new cloak

The paint is almost dry on Kāpiti Lights new mural ‘Metamorphic’. Artist Theo Arraj has been putting his talents to work over the last week and his winning concept now graces the back walls of 5 Coastlands Parade (opposite Kāpiti Cakes and Bakery).

Theo’s concept for the Kāpiti Lights laneway was selected by the Council’s Public Art Panel from a number of proposals submitted by local and national artists.

Deputy Mayor and member of the Public Arts Panel , Janet Holborow, says she’s delighted with the result.

“The colour and pattern positively contribute to the vibrancy of the Kāpiti Lights area. It’s brought the area to life and the complexity of Theo’s design means people will see something different every time they walk by.”

The mural is a key feature of the Council’s upgrade of the Kāpiti Lights area. The Coastlands Parade laneway now boasts new paving and planting and work to establish feature lighting will follow.

Infrastructure Services Group Manager Sean Mallon says Theo’s mural has taken the Council’s physical upgrade of the laneway to the next level.

“Theo’s bold design has certainly lightened up the area and complements the new planting and paving. It will be a focal point for people passing by.”

Work to create a public space outside the dental health centre by the Coastlands car park is also advancing, with bollards and seating installed and most of the paving and planting complete.
