Mayor welcomes preferred option for Peka Peka to Ōtaki shared path

Kāpiti Coast District Mayor K Gurunathan today welcomed the New Zealand Transport Agency's preferred alignment for a proposed shared path to run alongside the Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway.

"The Transport Agency has listened to what our community had to say and have come up with a solution that will greatly enhance cycling and walking connections across our district while at the same time showcasing the areas natural beauty.

"The Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway Cycleway, Walkway and Bridleway is a much loved addition to the Kāpiti Coast and is enjoyed by both locals and visitors to our district.

"The recommended alignment on the eastern side of the Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway from Mary Crest to the Ōtaki River makes sense and will further extend this safe and enjoyable recreational experience," said the Mayor.

More than 1,200 people attended community information days in October to have their say on options for a shared path.

Councillor James Cootes says he's pleased with the design of the preferred option.

"This brings Ōtaki one step closer to receiving what should have been included in the Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway contract from the start.

"This is not just about a shared path. It's about an amenity that will become a key attraction for our district stretching all the way from Ōtaki to Paekākāriki, bringing many economic benefits as well," said Councillor Cootes.
