Summer's here to enjoy, but stay safe and remember the beach rules

Summer is here and it's great to see people out and about and enjoying our beaches and public spaces. To help ensure we all have a safe and enjoyable holiday season, the Kāpiti Coast District Council is encouraging people to follow a few simple rules.

Environmental Standards Manager Jacquie Muir says that the summer holiday period is a rewarding but challenging time for the Council.

"While it is great to be out in the hot summer weather, cars and fires on beaches and the consumption of alcohol in public spaces can create problems, which is why we're reminding people of their obligations to help ensure that everyone can enjoy our public spaces together.

"As a general rule of thumb, cars are only permitted on the beach to drop off and retrieve boats. There are dozens of beach access points scattered along the Coast within easy walking distance of the beach so there's no need for people to drive along the beach to reach their favourite spot.

"There are a number of areas where alcohol restrictions are in place to help keep our community safe, this includes beach areas and other public spaces," said Ms Muir. "If you are unsure, look for the signs or visit the Council's website for maps and information about alcohol-free zones."

"There is now a Restricted Fire Season status in place for the district, which means you can't light an open air fire without gaining a permit from Fire and Emergency New Zealand."

The Council's team will be out and about with local Police on beaches this weekend, and regularly over the summer, reminding people of their responsibilities.
