Te Ātiawa Park courts lighting
Te Ātiawa Park courts will be getting new lights.
Kāpiti Coast District Council’s Operations and Finance Committee has approved funding for $31,500 for new lights at the courts.
A key initiative in the Council’s FutureKāpiti – Long term plan was to rebuild and resurface the 10 courts at the Paraparaumu Beach park, which are used for both tennis and netball. The major project came in under budget allowing for further improvements to be made to the sports facility.
Parks and Recreation Manager Alison Law says of the four existing halogen lights on the front roadside courts, only three are operational and two do not provide adequate lighting for playing netball at night.
Te Ātiawa Courts Centre (TCC) had expressed concern about the current lighting situation not being able to meet training and game demands for tennis and netball users.
The Council looked into options for improving the courts’ lighting and a consultant recommended using the existing light poles, as they are in good condition, and installing four new lights on the front five courts.
“Te Ātiawa Park courts are an important asset to the community and there is an opportunity to further enhance the level of participation and experience at the courts by upgrading the lights,” Ms Law says.
“New lights would complete the rebuild of the courts and ensure Te Ātiawa Park continues to meet the needs of local sports clubs for years to come.
Te Ātiawa Courts Centre secretary Brigid McKenzie says we’re very pleased with the decision to upgrade the lights and the continued support from Council.
Council will be aiming to have the lights installed before the winter season gets underway.
