Track works begin in Wi Parata Reserve to improve safety for users

Works have kicked off in Wi Parata Reserve to make changes to the layout of tracks to improve safety and avoid the danger of falling Astelia from the trees.

Wi Parata Reserve has been closed since February after concerns were raised about Astelia falling on tracks and posing a danger to track users.

Parks and Recreation Manager Alison Law says once works are complete the reserve will be reopened and safer for all users.

“After closing the track, we investigated options for the area and developed a plan to make minor modifications to plants in the reserve, as well as creating an alternative track to avoid Astelia removal where possible. Any modifications to plants in the reserve require resource consent and now we have that, works have started,” says Ms Law.

The area is a very old remnant forest, and is classed as an ecological site. Works within such a site require resource consent to ensure the values of such a site are protected.

“We have a biodiversity specialist working alongside our crews to carry out the works which will involve clearing the tracks, transplanting seedlings, removing one clump of epiphytes, putting in a few barriers, and making minor changes to some of the tracks. We’re also using structural soil to protect future root growth.”

“If everything goes to plan, we’ll be on track to reopen the reserve late June/early July.”
