Caps on the number of pokie machines and gaming venues in Kāpiti under the spotlight

Our policies on the management of pokie machines and gaming venues in Kāpiti are up for review, and we’re keen to hear from you.

Councils are required by law to set caps (upper limits) on the number of pokie machines and gaming venues (including TAB venues) in their districts, and to administer the processes for applying for new pokie machines.

“In our last review, in 2011, we put in place a district-wide cap of 228 pokie machines across Kāpiti as well as caps for each community – 45 for Paekākāriki/Raumati; 52 for Waikanae; 42 for Otaki; and 89 Paraparaumu,” says Kevin Black, Acting Group Manager Strategy and Planning.

“All the communities are sitting below their caps, with the exception of Ōtaki, where numbers are higher but gradually reducing. 

“We’d like you to tell us what you think of the caps we’ve set for each community – whether they’re too high, too low or about right – and why

“We’re also seeking feedback on our relocation policy for venue operators wishing to cancel their pokie machine licenses, and on proposed changes to the fees we charge venue operators.”
