Paraparaumu Library hosts Bruce MacMillan photography collection

The Kapiti Coast District Libraries invites the Kāpiti Coast community to explore the extensive photograph collection of Bruce MacMillan this summer.

Libraries and Arts Acting Manager Pam Coleman says Kanohi ki te Kanohi: Face to Face,  the exhibition being held from 27 January through to 16 February at the Paraparaumu Library, is the perfect opportunity to explore some of the Coast’s history. 

“From the 1950s through to the 1980s, Bruce MacMillan was a well-known Kāpiti Coast photographer who captured hundreds of thousands of wonderful and diverse moments in our history.  During this time of significant social change, he documented everything from local people, special occasions, urban settings and local industry. Our Libraries now care for his extensive collection.”

“We’re holding this during February because this is the time of year when we reflect on Te Tiriti o Waitangi and what it means to be a New Zealander on the Kāpiti Coast of Aotearoa New Zealand.

“These photographs are true taonga and they help us tell the story of who we are and where we come from. They are a gift from Bruce MacMillan and the people he photographed across our region – together we acknowledge and remember them.”

“We’ve worked with local resident Ra Higgott, Bright Photography in Waikanae and Mahara Gallery to carefully select a range of images for you to view.  Look closely and you might spot your grandparents, parents, aunties and uncles or family friends – or even your younger self.”
