Waikanae pop-up library opens in Mahara Place

The Kāpiti Coast District Council will open a weekday pop-up library in Mahara Place on Friday 21 December, following the closure of the Waikanae Library after the discovery of toxic mould.

Acting Group Manager Corporate Services Janice McDougall says she’s pleased to have some Council services back up and running for Waikanae customers, through this pop-up initiative.

“Continuing to deliver library and customer services to our Waikanae customers is important to us so as an interim step we’ve set up a pop-up service while we work on options for how we deliver our services in Waikanae next year.”

“We’re creating the pop-up space by using the current library foyer area and immediate outside space and our friendly staff will set up the pop-up each morning. We’ve closed the foyer off from rest of library, decontaminated, cleaned and tested to make sure it was all safe and healthy before we opened.”

“We’ll be open Monday to Friday from 10am until 2pm and at this stage, will be closed on public holidays and weekends.”

Library services will include issues, returns, reserves, and some library programmes.

Around 800 items are available for loan, including large print, talking books, and new fiction. Crates of mixed board books, early readers and picture books, and newspapers are also available.

The Council customer services team are on hand to give customers information on where and how to make payments, registering dogs, booking halls and requesting building files.

No payments systems are available, however payments for rates & water rates will continue to be taken at Waikanae Post Shop, and at other Council service centres in Paraparaumu and Ōtaki. Further information about the pop-up library and customer service, and the library closure can be found here.
