Wharemauku stream sewage leak
The Council is advising people to stay out of the Wharemauku stream and stream mouth at Marine Gardens following a sewerage overflow this morning.
“We found and removed a blockage causing the overflow under the Coastlands shopping centre, and we’ve now erected warning signs and are taking water quality samples from the Stream,” says Martyn Cole, Acting Group Manager Infrastructure Services.
“The overflow means there’s an increased risk of people getting sick with things like tummy bugs, so we’re advising everyone to stay out of the stream – from Coastlands to its mouth at Raumati Beach – until further notice.
“If you’re walking your dog near the stream, please keep it on a lead.”
If you have had contact with the stream or river mouth in the last few days (including collection of any food such as watercress) and have any health concerns please discuss with your family doctor or phone Healthline 0800 611 116.
We’ll provide any updates on the water quality when available. In the meantime, please contact our customer centre if you have any further questions.
