Paraparaumu Beach Market gets green light for relocation
Kāpiti Coast District Council has today given the green light for the Paraparaumu Saturday Morning Beach Market to relocate to Maclean Street and Park following strong support from the community during consultation.
Approval has been granted for a partial closure of Maclean Street while the Market is in operation as well as the use of Maclean Park as additional space for future growth and extra capacity during peak periods.
“After nearly 20 years of operation from various sites, I’m delighted we have been able to support the Market in securing a permanent home that gives stall holders and patrons certainty that the popular Kāpiti institution can continue into the future,” says Darryn Grant, Economic Development Manager.
“Given the relocation covers multiple sites, there were a number of consents required and we’ve worked with the market owners to support them through this process.
“This included consultation with over 60 Paraparaumu Beach businesses, with the majority welcoming the move and the increased foot traffic along Maclean Street. Where issues were identified, we have been able to put conditions in place that manage those concerns.”
“Our patrons, stall holders and the wider Kāpiti community have been overwhelming positive about the move and going through this process has really highlighted the value people place on the Market – not just as a place to buy and sell, but as a venue to regularly come together as a community,” says Warwick Halcrow who, together with Kevin Jones, operate the Market.
“I’ve said it before but the Market really is our community centre without walls and we are over the moon to have found a solution that allows us to continue on in Paraparaumu Beach.”
The Market will relocate to Maclean Street from Saturday 5 October 2019.
A partial road closure will be in place between Marine Parade and Seaview Road from 5am to 3pm. Stalls will be positioned in the carparks along both sides of the road, allowing visitors to walk the footpaths and access Maclean Street shops.
Parking along Maclean Street between Marine Parade and Seaview Road will be unavailable while the Market is in operation. Street parking on neighbouring roads will be unaffected.
