Support for the people of Christchurch
Following on from Friday’s tragic events in Christchurch, we’re aware that many of you want to know what you can do to show your support for the Christchurch community, and those families most affected by the mosque attack. Here are a few things you can consider:
Public vigil at Kāpiti Primary School
There is a public vigil, organised by two young people in our community with the support of Zeal, for 7pm Friday 22 March in the Kāpiti Primary School field.
A large turnout is expected for this event so we encourage you to consider leaving your vehicles at home or sharing a ride with whanau and friends. Carparking is available in the Coastlands Shopping Centre and in and around the civic precinct.
This is a smoke and alcohol-free event. To help keep everyone safe and comfortable we do ask that you leave your furry friends at home.
Please note candles are prohibited at this event.
Condolence books
Condolence books are now available in our Paekākāriki, Paraparaumu, Waikanae pop up and Ōtaki libraries for people to leave messages of support and sympathy for those affected by the Christchurch mosque shootings. The books will be there for people to sign during library open hours until Wednesday 27 March.
Flowers
A number of locations have been identified by the community as places to leave flowers in support of the families affected by Friday’s tragic events. This includes the “peace pole” in Paekākāriki, outside the Ōtaki Memorial Hall in Ōtaki, outside the Waikanae Memorial Hall in Waikanae and by the KiwiRiders sculpture off Marine Parade in Paraparaumu Beach.
Donations
