Rimu Road

Work on the Rimu Road/Iver Trask Place intersection to improve pedestrian and traffic safety was completed in mid July 2021. This upgrade is part of the Paraparaumu masterplan to transform Rimu Road into the main street of Paraparaumu.
The upgrade features a controlled pedestrian crossing on a new ‘raised table’ traffic-calming area. The zebra crossing on Rimu Road was removed as part of the works. Moving the pedestrian crossing to the intersection better matches pedestrian flow in the area. It highlights the concept of reorientating the town centre from north/south along the highway to east/west to protect and promote the view shaft to our taonga, Kāpiti Island. The cost of construction was approximately $1.3 million.
Three-stage approach
Stage 1: Traffic ran on the east (Coastlands) side of Rimu Road while work was carried out on the west (Council) side of the road. Iver Trask Place was closed at Rimu Road.
Stage 2: Traffic ran on the west (Council) side of Rimu Road while work was carried out on the east (Coastlands) side of the road.
Stage 3: The work site was in the middle of Rimu Road and one lane of traffic ran on each side of the work site.
Upgrade works included
- constructing the improved intersection on a traffic-calming ‘raised table’
- installing traffic lights to better control traffic moving through the Rimu Road/Iver Trask Place intersection
- installing a Barnes Dance pedestrian crossing
- removing the existing pedestrian crossing on Rimu Road.
Completed work
On the corner of Rimu Road, Iver Trask Place and Kāpiti Primary School, we've already completed:
- landscaping and planting
- creation of a bay for buses to safely pull in and collect passengers, and help traffic flow more smoothly.
Outside Tākiri House and the Coastlands car park we’ve:
- improved the access between the footpath and shops
- created four gardens
- provided more seating
- made some minor safety improvements with cycle lane markings.
