Pearl and Florrie's Way
This 15-metre mural lines “Pearl and Florrie’s Way”, the walkway from Beach Road in Paekākāriki to the beach. Local musician and film artist Phill Simmonds tells, in paint and song, the true story of 80-year-old twins Pearl and Florrie Ward and their encounter with a bull.
Scan the QR code at the start of the mural to play the song “Take the Bull By The Horns: The Ballad of Pearl and Florrie”. Lyrics to the song relate to the mural images, so you can sing along and follow the twins’ adventure as you walk down the hill to Paekākāriki beach.
This mural was a community-led project from the Paekākāriki Arts Walk Trust, funded by Council and the Wellington Community Trust, and supported by the Paekākāriki Community Board. It was opened in December 2021 by Mayor K Gurunathan, along with the twins’ great-grandchildren and other whānau members.
