Our vision and direction
Council directly impacts your tūrangawaewae – where you live, learn, work, play, and socialise. We provide everyday necessities such as water, street lighting, and roading, and help connect our communities through the provision of parks, pools, and libraries. We’re who you deal with when you want to build, buy, or renovate your property, and when you run a local business. We care for the local environment and the people who live here. We understand our history, deliver for the present, and plan for our communities’ future needs.
Our Vision | Toitū Kāpiti
Supporting sustainable development and communities by a strengthened focus on place, people, and partnership.
Our community outcomes
Our community outcomes help us respond to our challenges and keep our focus on what matters most – the cultural, economic, environmental, and social wellbeing of all the people in our district. These outcomes are the focus of our Long-term Plan 2024-34. Our financial and infrastructure strategies support how we’ll achieve them.
Working with our mana whenua partners
We’re committed to our partnership with mana whenua, and ensuring we address and prioritise issues of importance for our iwi partners. Appointed mana whenua representatives have a seat at our governance table, and we work together in mana-enhancing ways for our community.
Our place is resilient and liveable for current and future generations.
Our natural environment, water, and infrastructure remains accessible, well maintained and protected from degradation, including climate change impacts as we grow.
Tāngata (people) are supported to live, work and play in our district.
Our people have access to services, resources and opportunities that enable them to lead healthy, fulfilling lives and feel connected within their communities.
We partner with others to connect, facilitate, and advocate for the good of all in Kāpiti.
Our community is involved in decisions that affect Kāpiti. Business, government, and community groups work together to ensure resources and funds support our economic needs.
Developing our vision
More than 50 different laws guide and require local authorities to improve our community’s cultural, social, environmental, and economic wellbeing.
To make sure we’re heading in the right direction and can meet the needs of our growing district, we’ve been talking a lot with our community about what matters most.
We wanted to find out which actions will have the biggest impact in promoting sustainable, gradual growth through fair decisions that move us toward the future Kāpiti Coast residents want.
This led us to our top 10 priorities for delivering the three new community outcomes of people, place, and partnership, over the Long-term Plan 2024–34.
Our priorities
Our top 10 priorities were decided by councillors after talking with many people, groups, and sectors in our community in 2023/24. We tested these priorities during the Vision Kāpiti 2060 engagement by asking what would improve residents’ lives and meet their needs in the short term. We heard from about 2,500 people through regular community drop-ins, confirming our focus matches their concerns.
