MBIE and BRANZ have produced guidelines for sleepouts that don’t require building consent, in their Notes for single-story detached buildings.

These guidelines will help you understand whether you need either:

• advice from a building professional
• to employ a building professional to do the work for you.

The guide covers the building consent exemption for designing and constructing a single-storey detached sleepout of lightweight materials, with a 10–30 square metre floor area.
