Strategy and modelling
The combined effects of growth in the district, climate change impacts and aging assets have made managing our stormwater more challenging than ever.
Stormwater management strategy
We’ve started reviewing our stormwater strategy to include:
- climate change impacts
- effectiveness of hydraulic neutrality
- elevated groundwater levels
- growth
- increased community interest.
We’ll be actively engaging with interested parties as part of this, to better prepare our district for future challenges.
Flood hazard modelling
Council’s current flood hazard model is based on LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) flown in 2010, and NIWA’s 2007 ‘mid-range’ climate change predictions.
It does not include the effects of the expressway(s), housing developments in the district, and network upgrades undertaken since 2011.
Because of these gaps, Council have started reviewing and updating our flood hazard modelling, which identifies flood hazards and assesses the network performance, and risk to community and properties in a one in 100 and 50-year flood event.
