Community signs

If your community organisation, school or sports club would like to promote an upcoming event, temporary signs can be displayed at the 10 designated sites around the district.

These sites are available to use free of charge, but users must submit an application prior to installing their signs.

Guidelines

Since these signs  are located near busy roads, there are certain restrictions to ensure the safety of road users and the group that is responsible for installing and removing the sign.

To ensure the safety of road users, there are some conditions related to the size and number of signs, as well as the wording and graphics.

Content

• Signs must be restricted to text, symbols, logos and images/graphics that inform the general public of:
• • the name of the event
  • the business/company/individual/charity hosting or managing the event
  • sponsors involved with supporting the event
  • the days, dates and times of the event
  • the activities, goods and services offered at the event
  • the website address for the event (if relevant)
• Signs must not contain any contact numbers or email addresses.

Size

• The total area of the signs must not exceed 1.6m2.
• Signs must not exceed 1.8 metres in height (above original ground level).

Location

• Signs can only be displayed at the 10 designated locations.
• Only one sign at each location.
• The sign should not obstruct any other signs already in place.
• Signs attached to a fence adjoining a road boundary, the sign must not protrude above the top of the fence line.
• Sites cannot be used during General and Local election campaigns.

Timing

• Signs shall be erected and displayed only during the period beginning 30 days before the first day of the event.
• All signs shall be removed within 24 hours at the conclusion of the event.

Other

• No metal stakes can be used.
• Extreme care must be taken when digging holes for sign support as underground power, telephone, water and gas services may exist at any depth below the surface.
• All signs are to be maintained in a safe, tidy condition and inspected regularly.

Bookings

Applying to install community signs is easy. First, make sure your organisation and proposed sign meet the guidelines.

Once you are satisified you meet the guidelines, submit the online form, or email us if you need further information.

Enforcement

The approved sites are checked regularly by a Council officer who has the authority to remove and dispose of any sign which does not meet the criteria.
Council is not responsible for any damage to or the loss of an applicant’s sign.

There are strict guidelines that must be adhered to and Council retains the right to confiscate and dispose of signs that:

• contravene conditions
• have not been officially booked, or
• have not been removed by the due date

Kāpiti Coast District Council reserves the right to exercise discretion when approving applications.

Signs displayed in locations other than the sites provided, or do not meet the conditions, will be removed. There is a fee for the return of signs.

Signs that do not meet the conditions, but the are still intended to be displayed will require a resource consent.
